Dale Hollow Lake Clean Marinas Initiative Dale Hollow Lake is one of the cleanest lakes in America. That’s something we can all be proud of. Our waterways are the life blood of our existence – no matter where you live, work, or play. However, it takes all of us working together to keep our waters clean and fresh. The Corps of Engineers has initiated a certification process to recognize those marinas in the Cumberland River Basin that are striving to meet the guidelines that they have set forth - doing their part and setting a good example for all of us by being good stewards of our precious Dale Hollow Lake. The nature of marina business keeps its existence tied to the water on which it serves. The marinas hold one of the closest associations between man and Dale Hollow Lake. Therefore, they also have one of the greatest opportunities to make an impact on the environment. The seven major priorities of the project are sewage management, oil and gas control, solid waste and petroleum recycling/disposal, vessel maintenance and repair, marina siteing, design and maintenance, storm water management and erosion control, and public education. The marinas that have shown their dedication to meeting these goals are designated as “Clean Marinas”. Willow Grove Dock & Resort was the first to obtain this goal in March 2005. Sunset Marina & Resort followed in the spring of 2009. Mitchell Creek Marina is on track to obtain their certification in the spring of 2010. Congratulations to each of you! Keep up the good work. If you would like to do a little extra to help keep Dale Hollow Lake Clean, we invite you to participate in the annual Lake Shore Clean-Up held the last Saturday in September. In 2010 it will be held on September 25. There is usually a free cook-out and door prizes sponsored by the Friends of Dale Hollow Lake for the volunteers. If you would like more information or to pre-register, please call the Corps of Engineers office at (931) 243-3136. Boating/Water Safety Water safety is something far too many take for granted and can easily take lightly. Anytime you are on or near a body of water, always keep a few simple rules in mind. It’s a simple fact, life jackets help save lives – but only if you wear them properly. Life jackets float. You don’t. Granted they can’t always keep a person from drowning, they do significantly increase your chances for survival in situations where they are needed. Wear a life jacket, sized properly and fastened correctly, especially for children. Beach toys can’t do the job a life jacket is designed to do. There is a life jacket loaner program available on Dale Hollow Lake at these locations: Dale Hollow Dam Campground, Lilydale Campground, Pleasant Grove Campground, Willow Grove Campground, and Obey River Park Campground. This program loans children’s life jackets to boaters that have come unprepared for visiting children or the children have outgrown their old life jackets. Take a boater safety course and learn to swim. Always swim with a buddy and never dive or jump into the water. Swim in designated areas. Know your boat, use the proper type of boat for the purpose of your outing, and use it properly. Never boat under the influence. Know the boating laws of the state you are boating in. The laws have been created to help promote a safer experience for everyone. Watch out for the other guy. An ounce of prevention is much more valuable than a boatload of cure! Don’t stand while a small boat is moving. Ride a personal watercraft only with an experienced adult driver. Don’t sit on the gunwales or the bow of a moving boat. To learn more about water safety, check out the website at the link at www.lrn.usace.army.mil/op/DAL/rec/water_safety.htm. We want you to have a fun and memorable experience on Dale Hollow Lake and to keep coming back for years to come. Stay Safe!

| East Port Marina & Resort is tucked away on the eastern end of Dale Hollow Lake on the Obey River. This marina has a laid back atmosphere and awesome cheeseburgers! Richard DeVries became captain of this marina a few years ago, along with wife, Wendy, and sons, Nathan and Tanner. They all love the DHL lake life. Richard also enlisted his brother, Ross, his lovely wife, Ana, and their son, Austin who were living in Texas at the time, to help them with this new adventure. Together, they have had a wonderful time upgrading the marina, including new bathrooms, steps, boats, ramps, and so much more! Half of the fun has been getting to know everyone. They offer exceptional service and go the extra mile to make their guests have an easy vacation. They love serving, which was apparent at their Customer Appreciation Night at the marina’s restaurant a few weeks ago. The Stenger and Fowler families of Indiana have been coming to this lake for many years and love hanging out at East Port because of the relaxed environment and the family feel. They said that it is like coming home and both have invested in houseboats and cabins which they have since put on the East Port rental program. The Campbell family of Alpine has also added their boat to the East Port fleet of rentals. So, you don’t need to bring your own boat, just rent one from East Port. They also offer astounding houseboat rentals, with their newest addition taking its maiden voyage in Spring 2010 - the Black Pearl. The Black Pearl will be the first pirate themed houseboat rental on Dale Hollow Lake and will have awesome amenities including a hot tub, six bedrooms, and two slides. The restaurant alone is worth coming down to for their famous cheeseburgers. They also offer homemade tortilla chips and salsa, Tex Mex, and their ever popular catfish dinners every day of the week. The catfish dinner includes their delicious catfish, hush puppies, homemade coleslaw and French fries or onion rings. Mmmmmm. There is also another huge attraction - the East Port mascot, “guard dog” - Cowboy. This dog loves to play. Kids and adults can’t help but fall in love with him. He will fetch anything and everything. East Port Marina & Resort is a great place to hang out with its covered patio, background music and easy going atmosphere. East Port not only has some awesome houseboat and boat rentals, but claims some of the largest cabins for rent on Dale Hollow Lake with the Cliffhanger being one of the most popular, sleeping 28 and offering amenities to keep everyone satisfied, including a pool table, air hockey, foosball, shuffleboard, amazing lake views, and all the comforts of home. Follow East Port Marina & Resort on Facebook (Search for East Port Marina) and visit their website for the latest news and information about their cabin and houseboat fleet for your vacation on DHL. Richard has written a wonderful story that he has published on his Facebook page (under Notes at the time of writing this story). He would love to share with you his knowledge of fishing (and more). He’ll be the first to tell you though, he’s not a professional fisherman, but he knows how he catches fish and how to have a good time.
