Pickett County Fair

Pickett County had a County Fair! Yes, Steve and Retta Reagan and the Pickett County Horseman's Association pulled together and offered the community, the visitors and the surrounding areas an outstanding county fair! Grant and Blake loved the rides and walking down the Midway was a real treat! Got to see so many smiling faces, families enjoying the beautiful summer evening and the smell of funnel cakes in the air! The $15.00 armband for the children was such a bargain and even the adults were having a good time just sitting around, while their children and grandchildren were having the times of their lives! The music down at the stage was very entertaining. Everyone sat for hours enjoying the local sounds of bluegrass, gospel and country music!

Everyone had a good time and 2009 promises to be an even bigger year. The Burckhard family will be sure to be back and will tell lots of our friends about the Pickett County Fair!

Staycation Expo Winners

Last weekend Terry, Grant, Blake and I had the opportunity to participate in the Staycation Expo at CoolSprings Galleria near Nashville, TN. (For those that might not have heard that term, it is used to refer to a vacation close to home.) We had a great time and had the opportunity to share with those that stopped by our booth what a wonderful place we are so blessed to be able to call home. We absolutely love it here. There is so much to see and do and I find myself learning more nearly everyday. I discovered yesterday that there is a German built, turn of the (last) century, "castle" in the nearby Wartburg area. (Be assured I will learn more about this in the coming weeks.) There are so many events going on right now and will be for the next few months. ...so much to do, so little time to experience them all. (Check the events page if you would like to schedule your staycation.)

We always try to incorporate in our shows an opportunity for those that visit us the chance to win a prize. All they need do is register for the drawing. This time, we offered a 2 night stay at a local accommodation for 2 people and another prize of a 1/2 day kayak adventure for 2 people in either region (certain restrictions apply). Dale Hollow Cabin Rentals is also offering a 10% and 5% discount on a rental to 2 additional lucky winners. These winners are being notified by mail. They are Alan Phillips - 2 night stay; Billie McFaden - 1/2 day kayak adventure; Jeff Bohanan - 10% discount; and Robert Birdwell - 5% discount. Congratulations to all these winners!

Happy Summer! HappyFace

Old Pine Knot Raceway

Another new and fantastic business has been opened up in the Big South Fork region by Andy and Andrea Jordan from Winfield, TN. Andy has quite literally moved mountains of dirt in the last seven weeks. You should have seen Grant and Blake's eyes when the backhoes were digging bigger mud holes, moving old cars and vans to the pit area. There reaction to the site of the huge Monster trucks, well it was priceless. Now I know why they call them Monster Trucks. These machines are absolutely HUGE and yes, they can crush things, drive over obstacles including cars and buses with an enormous power to entertain and the ability to achieve even more.

The Old Pine Knot Raceway is now open just over the TN/KY state line in Pine Knot, KY. Andy has envisioned this for over a year. Let me tell you, the place was packed on Saturday night for the big Monster Truck Show. The arena seated about 6,000 fans from all over TN, KY and even from places farther away like Iowa, Alaska, Oklahoma and California.

The flurry of activity in the afternoon was exciting and a show in itself. Bulldozers, backhoes moving dirt, packing dirt, moving junk cars, building ramps and putting the final touches on the arena seating. New bleachers had been erected with space for over 2,000 spectators, with other seating and open space available for blankets and stadium chairs. Vendors lined up selling hamburgers, sno-cones, cold drinks, t-shirts, souvenirs and much more! My family was mesmerized by what Andy and his team had achieved in about seven short weeks. Their plans for the future are also nothing short of amazing. Fifty acres has been developed, out of about 750 acres that are available. A large pond offers motorized racing of small boats and plenty of area for camping and relaxing. Acres and acres of land are available for ATV and off-road enjoyment with cabins available for rent weekly or for the weekend. There will be a whole host of activities at the Old Pine Knot Raceway in the future, so check out their website, www.cumberlandsafari.com, which will post the events.

Each year at this time, I take the time to reflect upon the sacrifices of the many families that have made the United States of America such a great country. Sure, I realize our country isn't perfect, but I can't think of any better.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for the positive things you do everyday and those acts of your family and ancestors that have gone into the making of the greatest nation on earth - the precious country we share. A special thank you to all our veterans, service members and their families! Your service is much appreciated. We would be much less of a nation, if at all, without your sacrafice.

Each year, the communities around the regions celebrate the holiday in their individual ways. These small town celebrations are the epitamy of Americana. Willow Grove Dock has a fireworks display on the lake, East Fork Stables has a Pig Roast, Byrdstown has old fashioned games on the historic town square, along with a huge fireworks display, Jamestown has a Demolition Derby with their celebration, Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park has a big 3 day celebration, Stearns hosts a 5 day July 4th Homecoming & Heritage Days celebration, and their is so much more. So please visit the event page on our websites for a more detailed list of events (www.Go2DHL.com or www.Go2BSF.com).
Farmers market in Byrdstown, Dale Hollow Lake

Byrdstown has a farmer's market. Steve Reagan has orchestrated getting this farmer's market erected next to Dale Hollow Shell on Hwy. 111. There were many farmers there on Saturday morning and a wide variety of produce, products and smiles! Everybody loves a farmer's market and it is wonderful to be able to taste and sample what was picked that morning. There was a wide variety of green beans, ripe, juicy red tomatoes, squash, zucchini and some yummy honey. Winnie the Pooh would have been so happy to try this honey homemade by the Brannum family. The prices were right and the atmosphere was great. Make sure you visit and support our local farmers and if you are on vacation, nothing tastes better than farm fresh produce on your hamburger, your salads or your favorite recipes!

Lilly

Well, summer is here! The Burckhards have enjoyed their first official swim at Dale Hollow Lake. We had a great time with our neighbors, Kenny and Paula. They took us out on their vintage 1965 speedboat they have docked at Star Point Resort. Their dog, Lilly, came along too. She's a true seadog and loves the water! She sat out on the bow of the boat with no indication of falling off. It was an amazing site to see! Her canine legs were like shock absorbers as we bounced across the waves.

We had a ball washing the dog in the lake. The water temperature is ideal, not too hot or too cold. Paula's swimming lessons for Grant and Blake were awesome. Grant is much more confident now. They loved the noodle idea. So, we went out and purchased them their own boat noodles right away. It's such a great opportunity to allow the boys to swim and enjoy such a fun water toy and be confident and comfortable in the water.

The Burckhard Family had such a wonderful time. I feel that we are so blessed to be able to live at Dale Hollow Lake! We can go swimming most any evening after work and on weekends, enjoying quality time with our family and friends.

Dale Hollow State Park Marina

Recently we had the pleasure of visiting the new, expanded Dale Hollow State Park Marina, over on the northern part of Dale Hollow Lake. Mr. Dudley Webb, from the Webb Companies and his manager, right hand man, Joe Foley had the grand opening with officials from Kentucky, slip customers, and interested citizens from the surrounding areas with a speech, hamburgers, hot dogs, door prizes and the official tour. I was very impressed with the concrete walkways, wider ramp areas and it looked to be around 200 new slips. The Ship Store is state-of-the-art, looking more like a convenience store, but with a great nautical feel, nice lighting and great souvenir items like t-shirts, hats, fishing gear etc. They also have lots of convenience items to microwave, dairy, ice cream and freezers full of items that one would need on vacation. Make sure to take a look around and say hello to Joe Foley and crew. Dale Hollow State Park Marina is looking forward to offering shuttle service from the boat ramp to the golf course and the restaurant, lodge area. Dale Hollow Lake has had many improvements on the lake recently, with Mitchell Creek Restaurant now open, East Port Marina, cooking their famous cheeseburgers on the lake and Cedar Hill Marina, being bought by the Korn family with many expansions on the horizon.

Cumberland Mountain General Store

Okay, get ready to go back in time and have an old-fashioned milkshake, while listening to Elvis and authentic 50's music. Cumberland Mountain General Store has just expanded their authentic 50's Diner, which is very popular throughout the year. During Hwy. 127, Ron and Lana, owners of Cumberland Mountain General Store serve up the most delicious cheeseburger platters with old-fashioned milkshakes. Sit on a stool at the soda fountain, or sit in their newly expanded 50's style diner or their enclosed porch area, that can accommodate up to 50 diners. Grant and Blake tasted their chocolate milkshake on the weekend and were delighted with the whipped cream on the top and the Elvis music in the background. The Cumberland Mountain General Store has been delighting diners from all over the country with their awesome diner and their antique selections. Come on over and check out from May 1st, when the store and diner officially open.

Cedar Creek Cattle Company

OK, Dallas (my cowboy) finally got me up on a horse. For years I have been writing about the Big South Fork region and admiring the beautiful horses along the way and the fantastic horse farms and stables, however unbeknownst to most people, I am a little afraid of horses. Well Dallas got me up on Beauty the other day, while the Burckhard family were checking out Cedar Creek Cattle Company. We learned more about the 278 acre ranch and the Archambault and Joan Robert's vision and passion for offering horse back riding trails and lessons on their ranch. Cowboy Dallas was fantastic and got me on "Beauty" and took me down some trails. While back at the ranch, hospitable Joan entertained Grant and Blake with roping the bull's horns and talking to husband Terry. Their trails meander through white pine forests, along flowing creek beds with fantastic geological formations.

This is definitely worth the trip and the service and views are fantastic. More about Cedar Creek Cattle Company in the upcoming Big South Fork Visitor Guide 2008-2009 which comes out around the 22nd of May, 2008! If you wish to get your latest copy, don't hesitate to send us a request.

Happy Trails....Annie
