  Chef Zoom at Sunset Marina & Resort Restaurant is quite a character. Last weekend as a wrap up to the first Dale Hollow Lake Poker Run (there will be another Aug. 22-30 – this one went well, however, we wish there had been more participants in the run itself), Chef Zoom decided to throw a bit of a “party”. He called it “Guys & Grills”. He and Chef Drew rolled out the barbeque grill onto the dockside patio and whipped up some fantastic food. On the menu was Smoked Pork Loin in Sunset’s own Jack Daniels Glaze, Grilled Mahi-Mahi Tuna with Tequila Fruit Salsa, and more. Chef Zoom brought out his guitar and entertained the folks for a while as well. The crowd was delighted. Singer/Songwriter Mike Cullison was also scheduled to entertain the crowd, but I missed his performance. I’m sure it was great too. I don’t know yet what Zoom has up his sleeve for the next Poker Run, but I expect he will be “cooking up” something extra special.     Ahhh, springtime. We are so blessed by God to be able to share the glorious beauty that surrounds us here on the Cumberland Plateau. These pictures are from a recent trip to Fall Creek Falls State Park. The hemlocks are gorgeous; all the wildflowers are beginning to spring up. With the temperatures forecast to reach in the 80’s over the next few days, many more will be popping out of their winter hibernation and blessing us with their beauty. The rhododendrons and more will be exploding with color all throughout the area, including up into the Big South Fork region. The bountiful rainfalls that we have experienced recently have all the waterfalls spilling over their thresholds and sometimes creating small rainbows in their mist. It’s a great time of year to get out and hike the regions. There are numerous state parks, as well as the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area that offer seemingly endless miles of trail options for most any type of outdoor recreation. Kayaking and canoeing would also be great right now. …and fishing too! There is also abundant wildlife to enjoy. The birds are singing. The bees are buzzing. The first rays of light each morning bring on an outburst of joyous songs from our feathered friends. Yesterday morning, I even heard a wild turkey gobble near my home. This morning, I was greeted by the sounds of geese flying through the dawn skies. Daybreak is an awesome time of day.   Last weekend was my annual girls getaway weekend with my friends Tammie (from Cincinnati) and Lynn (from Detroit). Unfortunately, due to work and family obligations, they were unable to come this time. However, Terry and the boys made the weekend extra special. We spent the entire weekend celebrating my birthday. They are such sweethearts! This year was a special treat. We arranged to enjoy the weekend at Kicking Back Cabin (KBC) in the Big South Fork. Wow, what a wonderful place to stay. Owners, Shawn and Kathy Larson have really created a perfect spot. The cabin is quite comfortable and luxurious. It is nestled in Spruce Creek Acres, a true equestrian style community with miles of great groomed trails (many of them leading to the Big South Fork National Recreation Area), beautiful homes, and acreage and pasture land with a common pavilion area for the friendly homeowners to enjoy. The master bedroom had comfy terry robes for Terry and I, Bath and Body Works toiletries, shower, and bath gel for the large romantic Jacuzzi, and wonderful heavenly beds with high thread count sheets, divine comforters, and blankets. Fresh spring flowers adorned the house, which is something that delights my senses. The rest of the house was just as special. I highly recommend the experience to anyone. We enjoyed a spectacular family friendly weekend. Kicking Back Cabin isn’t the only great place to getaway to in the Big South Fork (or at Dale Hollow Lake or Fall Creek Falls regions). There are plenty of exceptional places to getaway and spend quality time with family and friends.
